With a column running in the Chicago Sun-Times.....

Mary Laney is an investigative journalist whose incisive commentaries bring about change. She’s stayed undercover four days and nights in the country’s largest women’s jail to expose a corrupt warden-and see her removed. She’s been credited with bringing about legislative changes on guns laws. She convinced a union to allow pictures of missing children to run overnight, without a required union producer, and located 14 children within six months.

Laney began her career as a writer with WFLD-TV in Chicago. She also wrote occasional features for the Chicago Sun-Times. When CBS began its all-news radio format at WBBM, Mary was hired as a writer, and, within months became Producer and reporter. Channel 2, WBBM-TV then hired Mary as a writer/producer and soon placed her on air as nightly reporter.

Wanting to stay in Chicago to raise her two sons, she turned down network offers for Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York and Paris. She joined NBC, WMAQ-TV as Editorial Director, and within months was signed to anchor the nightly news as well as deliver daily political commentaries. When the station ended commentaries, she accepted Mayor Richard Daley’s offer to become Tourism Director, traveling worldwide, promoting Chicago through appearances and videos she produced.

Laney also reported for CNN’s Midwest bureau, co hosted a radio talk show on WMAQ, NBC Radio, syndicated her “Spirit of the Sport” radio program, produced elements of the video encyclopedia “Enter Here”, and continued to write for newspapers.

She is the recipient of over 100 awards, including 8 Emmy Awards and the Newspaper Veterans’ Classy Guy Award (the first woman to be so honored).
